The Baltimore Ravens are entering a new era, with Jesse Minter taking over as the team’s had coach, and fans are excited to see what he has in store. Because of Minter’s reputation as a defensive mastermind, everyone is especially excited to see how he will use star safety Kyle Hamilton.

Hamilton is the best safety in the NFL, and has been for years. That was recently corroborated by ESPN’s annual position rankings done by league scouts, execs, and coaches. The Ravens defender was ranked as the No. 1 safety for the second year in a row, confirming what Baltimore fans already knew.

The list also fed another belief of Ravens fans; that belief is that Hamilton will find a way to be even better under Minter. The ranking supported that thought, because the No. 2 safety on the list was Los Angeles Chargers defender Derwin James.

James has been one of the best safeties in the NFL since he entered the league, and that’s why it was noteworthy that an anonymous secondary coach said, “I thought Derwin had his best, most complete year.” While James has been dominant his entire career, a huge emphasis was put on his last two seasons.

It’s not a coincidence that those two years were also the seasons when Minter served as James’ defensive coordinator with the Chargers.

Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter should further elevate Kyle Hamilton’s game just like he did with Derwin James

James was already a three-time Pro Bowler before Minter arrived, but he turned things up a notch the last couple of seasons. In 32 regular season games over the last two years, James recorded four interceptions, 7.5 sacks, 187 tackles, and 16 tackles for a loss. Minter had James all over the field, setting him up to make plays everywhere.

Hamilton is coming off his third straight Pro Bowl season, posting 105 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, one sack, and nine pass deflections in 16 games. The Baltimore safety is only entering his fifth season in the league, and is just 25 years old.

That means he should have plenty of elite years in front of him, and will have the opportunity to really grow with Minter. The head coach will likely get really creative with the safety, and Ravens fans will see Kyle Hamilton widen the gap between him and the rest of the good safeties in the league.
