Perfect timing.

While the Baltimore Ravens’ Week 11 game against the Cleveland Browns was full of miscues, the defense was making plays.

After Cleveland rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel left the game with a concussion, it was fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders’ time to shine. Baltimore’s defense, which already had its foot on the gas, slammed its pedal to the floor once Sanders entered.

On Sanders’ first drive, he was sacked by versatile safety Kyle Hamilton. Following the big-time sack, Hamilton and Baltimore’s defense had plenty of fun with the ensuing celebration. They wasted no time using Sanders’ celebration that he made iconic at Colorado against him.

That was not the only play the defense made early in the fifth-round pick’s first NFL regular-season action. On the next drive, they got pressure on Sanders in the backfield, and in a panic, the 23-year-old threw an interception right into the hands of second-year cornerback Nate Wiggins.

It was Wiggins’ third interception of the year, fourth of his career, and third against the Browns.

Sanders was also sacked by undrafted rookie corner Keyon Martin on third down in his next opportunity.

These types of struggles are expected from rookie quarterbacks, especially from a player like Sanders, who had trouble holding onto the ball for far too long in college and made risky plays at times. Cleveland’s offensive line has not given him much help, but those struggles clearly continued in his debut, and Baltimore’s defense took full advantage of those errors.

This is a jot of energy from the Ravens’ defense. They have now made it five straight games with a forced turnover, and the defensive front is starting to make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable in the pocket. They had three sacks through three quarters, two of those quickly coming on Sanders in the third quarter.

In his first three drives, Sanders completed two of five passes for 12 yards and an interception. He also took two sacks. Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr’s unit made him panic early and often, as they continued to make an encouraging surge in the second half of the season.
