With their season headed downhill, the Baltimore Ravens may sell at the trade deadline. On the flip side, the New York Giants are expected to be buyers in their first year under John Harbaugh. Could Harbaugh be interested in any of his former players?
Calais Campbell makes a lot of sense as a trade candidate.
Campbell is a rental, and while reports have mentioned the Giants aren’t looking at rentals, they might be desperate for defensive line help. They’re first in the NFC East — their front office should look to upgrade their bottom-10 run defense in any way possible.
After playing for three years under Harbaugh from 2021 to 2023, a Harbaugh/Campbell reunion could be in store. And given the direction they’re headed, the Ravens should definitely entertain possibly dealing Campbell.
Baltimore Ravens could have Calais Campbell trade partner in the New York Giants
The Ravens aren’t guaranteed to be sellers. They could stand pat, or even make a semi-aggressive move to address the quarterback position. However, this team doesn’t appear to be going anywhere in 2026 — they need to be open to trade negotiations for players who won’t be here in 2027.
Of those guys, Calais Campbell is an intriguing piece. He’s not the player he once was, but he’s a trusted veteran any contending team should want on their roster. He brings experience, leadership, and ability. Those are playoff-contending qualities.
Campbell would also be rather cheap. As a 40-year-old on a one-year contract, he wouldn’t fetch much more than a sixth-round pick. He’d be an easy acquisition for teams buying at the trade deadline, and for the Ravens, it'd be another pick to add to Eric DeCosta's arsenal.
Most notably, Campbell is potentially a perfect fit for the New York Giants.
At 6-foot-8 and 307 pounds, Campbell can be a seamless fit as a run defender. A massive roadblock who dictates blocks at the point of attack is exactly what the Giants should be after.
New York has allowed 128.1 rushing yards per game this season, which ranks 26th in the NFL. That might sneak by and get them into the playoffs in a disappointing NFC East, but if they want to be competitive, they must find someone to boost them in that area.
Campbell also brings a jolt as a pass rusher. Campbell only has 1 sack, and he’s not a game-changer there anymore, but his 15 pressures rank 29th among defensive linemen. There’s enough there to interest teams, especially the Giants, who are tied for last with an abysmal 9 team sacks.
D.J. Reader has been an excellent free-agent addition for the Giants. On the other hand, Shelby Harris and Darius Alexander haven’t played well. They have a clear opening for Campbell along that defensive front.
Sure, New York probably wants a younger option with multiple years left on his deal. Campbell’s connection with John Harbaugh could make for an exception, though. He played some exceptional football under Harbaugh; the Giants head coach may want him back.
Would the Ravens opt to trade Calais Campbell? There’s no indication of how Eric DeCosta will play his cards right now. But if the season keeps trending down a troubling path, Campbell would likely be someone teams call for.
