The Baltimore Ravens are looking to turn the corner under the new leadership of Jesse Minter. While they have made several changes to the roster, there are still some areas that could use another addition.
One of those spots comes at kicker since Tyler Loop is the only kicker under contract for this team. Loop is going into his second year with the team after his rookie season ended on a sour note. In the Week 18 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Loop missed a game-winning 44-yard field goal.
It seems like the bright lights got to him a bit, so although Loop will be looking to rebound, the Ravens would be wise to add some veteran competition this summer. And Daniel Carlson looks like an easy pick up for Baltimore.
Baltimore Ravens should sign Daniel Carlson to give Tyler Loop competition
Carlson has been in the NFL for eight seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. During his time there, he showed the ability to be consistent and has the power to extend the field goal range. In 129 games, he went 225-of-259 (86 percent) on field goal attempts and 244-of-255 (95 percent) on extra point attempts.
Between 40-49 yards, Carlson is 54-of-70 (77 percent) and 37-of-51 (72 percent) from 50-plus yards away. Of course, his percentage decreased the farther he went back, but it's clear he has the range to hit those field goals.
Meanwhile, in 2025, Loop was 30-of-34 (88 percent) on field goals and 44-of-46 (95 percent) on extra points. He certainly was successful, including from the 40-49 range, where he went 8-of-9 (88 percent), but his miss came at the biggest moment. From 50-plus yards away, Loop was just 1-of-4 (25 percent), which isn't the best mark.
When you add competition to a room, it forces players to bring their best foot forward, and that's what Baltimore should do with their kicker. They don't have anyone in the building who can even push Loop. Even if they want to have Loop be the kicker in 2026, it doesn't hurt to light a fire under him. And having the idea that someone can take your job is one of the best ways to do so.
Carlson has been in the NFL for a while now and knows what it takes to be effective year after year. He could provide Loop with some meaningful tips while allowing him to be on his 'A' game every day. Those are things that could have positive ripple effects on Loop and help him elevate his game.
Kickers are streaky and can sometimes get in their own heads. While that may not be the case with Loop, signing another kicker could give him the wake-up call he needs going into a crucial 2026 season.
