For the past few years, the Baltimore Ravens have been inconsistent on special teams. Justin Tucker heavily regressed, Jordan Stout has struggled, and the return games have failed to provide a regular spark. However, the unit looks miles better heading into 2025.

Rookie Tyler Loop has shown the potential to be one of the better kickers in the NFL this year. Stout looked great in the preseason, and Baltimore should have the solution to their return struggles. Rookie wide receiver LaJohntay Wester should handle the punt duties, and second-year running back Rasheen Ali may quietly become the answer on kick returns and other phases on special teams.

Rasheen Ali could make a bigger impact than anyone imagines in 2025

Ali cracked Baltimore’s 53-man roster as the team’s fourth running back, much in part due to his play as a specialist. He plays with every unit and does so very well. Head Coach John Harbaugh always comes away impressed by his impact, and he commended his efforts on special teams all preseason long. While it looks like he snuck onto the team as a depth piece, he should have a massive role with the special teams unit.

The former Marshall star will likely be fighting fellow running back Keaton Mitchell for the kick returner job. Mitchell's blazing speed makes him the most desirable option there, but Ali had the better plays this preseason. Sure, it was a small sample size, but the 24-year-old broke returns for 25 and 69 yards in two opportunities.

Ali is certainly showing the will to make his presence felt in any way possible. Following his stellar performance against the Dallas Cowboys back in Week 2 of the preseason, he harped on how he sees his role in the Ravens’ offense and special teams unit.

“[I try] to contribute to the team any way I can; special teams, running the ball, doing whatever I can to have a good part in the team,” Ali said. “Just contributing as much as I can in all phases of the game and giving my best.”

With his spot on the active roster set in stone, Ali will have to prove himself worthy of a consistent role. In the preseason, he showed outstanding vision and patience out of the backfield, which benefited him as a returner, as well. He also possesses great speed and burst, which, while not as electric as Mitchell’s, pair perfectly with his ability to hit gaps with confidence. He deserves a shot as the starting kick returner, and if he takes advantage of the opportunity, he should have a significant impact in 2025.
