The Baltimore Ravens made a flurry of offseason moves this year, and in all honesty, it feels like they were way more aggressive than usual. There was a newfound urgency.

The biggest and baddest additions of Baltimore’s offseason include the hiring of Jesse Minter and signing of Trey Hendrickson. Others, like the addition of Calais Campbell, have gotten lots of praise. One of the best, though, might be signing Jaylinn Hawkins.

Hawkins feels like the final piece to a secondary that has no shortage of talent; they just need to find their footing. Hawkins can help them do just that. In fact, there’s not much he can’t do, and the pairing with Minter is very exciting. He recently teased the vision that Minter has for him on an episode of The Lounge with Ryan Mink and Clifton Brown.

“You can’t give too much of the recipe, but for sure, versatile. That’s one of my strengths. Doing versatile things. I can’t give too much in-depth, but yeah,” Hawkins said.

Versatility is the name of the game in the safety room, and personally, that’s enough to get me excited for what the defense could do in 2026.

Baltimore Ravens’ underrated free-agent addition feels like the perfect fit

Obviously, Jaylinn Hawkins didn’t say a whole lot there. But he definitely teased fans with an intriguing thought for the upcoming season. Somehow, an already deep and versatile safety room is going to get more versatile. They already had Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks, but now they get to throw Hawkins into that equation? Ridiculous.

And if that’s not enough for you, well, you best believe that with Jesse Minter running the show, he’s going to get creative. He helped sell the idea of coming to Baltimore to Hawkins. And evidently, Hawkins likes what he’s seen from Minter early on. Later in the interview with Mink and Brown, he highlighted what he likes about Minter’s defense.

“I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity,” Hawkins said. “It’s very simple, but also very strategic. It’s smart the way his playcalling is…It’s early days, so once you start gameplanning, he could really cook up.”

Well, we saw how Minter used Derwin James, and it worked out extremely well. Now, Hawkins isn’t Derwin James, and that’ll probably be Hamilton’s role if anything, but it’s clear Minter knows how to use players to the best of their abilities. It sounds like the 42-year-old head coach is ready to deploy Hawkins wherever he needs him, and Hawkins is picking it up quickly, too.

All this talk about versatility is extremely helpful if you think about where the defense was in 2025. I don’t need to talk too much about it, but it was simply dreadful; the cornerback room included. But when you have guys like Hamilton and Hawkins, heck, maybe even Starks, who can align in different areas on the field, that could hide the flaws.

Baltimore’s cornerbacks are bound to take a step forward with the changing of the guard on defense, but there will remain opportunities for the safeties to slide in there and produce. It’s become a pretty deep secondary when you take a look at the depth chart. That makes the Hawkins addition already look like a home run.
