The Baltimore Ravens made their first surprise move of NFL roster cutdown day by cutting 2022 fourth-round pick Jalyn Armour-Davis, per Jordan Schultz. The former Alabama standout had a strong training camp and preseason showing, but health concerns continue to plague him as he enters his fourth season.

The move all but secures a spot for undrafted rookie cornerback Keyon Martin, who has been one of Baltimore’s best players through preseason action. The 24-year-old staked his claim in one of the spots on the initial 53-man roster in the preseason finale, with a pick-six and excellent special teams play.

Ravens make a shocking cut, parting ways with Jalyn Armour-Davis

Armour-Davis still has a ton of talent. He was praised as one of the most intelligent defensive backs in Baltimore’s secondary all offseason, but has yet to put together a fully healthy campaign. He played in all three preseason games, and even snatched an interception in Week 3 against the Washington Commanders, but dealt with nagging injuries throughout training camp. The talent is there, but at some point, the injuries become too much.

He has dealt with a litany of injuries that have kept him off the field, including multiple stints on injured reserve through his brief career thus far. The list includes repeated hamstring issues and a lower leg injury. Armour-Davis has been limited to just 19 games and two starts through three seasons. Now, it appears he will be looking for a new home.

In response, Martin should be the Ravens’ sixth corner heading into the regular season. He showcased a strong football IQ, ball skills, and dominance on special teams. He quickly became a favorite of the coaching staff due to his play, and he will rightfully make the active roster to begin the season.

It is tough to see Armour-Davis go, as many will wonder what could have been if he had not been dealt a harsh hand with injuries. However, with such an encouraging offseason that saw him be a key playmaker in practice and preseason, he should have no problem finding a new team.

He also grew to become a versatile defensive back in recent months, showing the capabilities to play everywhere on the defense, including safety. With his elite IQ and versatility, he should be one of the biggest names on the waiver wire.
