The Baltimore Ravens are one of several teams searching for a new head coach this offseason. After firing John Harbaugh, they have a vacancy at that spot for the first time in 18 years.

The team has already conducted several interviews, and plenty more are expected to come. With some requested coaches still in the playoffs, a few of those will have to wait. For others, though, Baltimore has already finished the interview process.

As of Sunday evening, the Ravens have completed five interviews. The most recent one includes Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Nagy was initially the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015, before graduating to OC from 2016 to 2017.

He eventually landed a head coaching gig with the Chicago Bears in 2018, but was fired following the 2021 season. In four years as head coach he held a record of 34-31. That included an exceptional 2018 campaign where his team went 12-4 and won the NFC North.

Ultimately, Nagy’s tenure in Chicago took a downturn and was underwhelming, but he showcased flashes.

He returned to Kansas City in 2022 as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach, and since 2023, he has taken back his prior OC duties. Nagy continues to learn from one of the all-time great head coaches in Andy Reid, and it sounds like he could earn another chance.

That chance could be in Baltimore, and it wouldn’t be the first time they signed a head coach from the Andy Reid coaching tree.

Ravens could go back to Andy Reid's coaching tree

When the Ravens found Harbaugh all the way back in 2008, he, too, came from Andy Reid’s system. Harbaugh joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff in 1998, one year before Reid got there. However, when Reid became head coach in 1999, he kept Harbaugh as a key part of his staff.

Harbaugh was the special teams coach under Reid from 1998 to 2006. In 2007, he took the role of defensive backs coach, and obviously, it wasn’t too long after that when he became head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

In total, Harbaugh spent nine seasons with Reid before taking his talents to Baltimore. Coincidentally, Nagy just completed his ninth season alongside Reid with the Chiefs. However, if you include those Philadelphia years, Nagy has followed the veteran head coach around since 2008, excluding that four-year stint in Chicago.

It’s clear that many teams trust Reid’s system, and along with his offensive expertise, it’s likely part of what makes Nagy an intriguing candidate for open head coaching jobs around the league.

Outside of Harbaugh and Nagy, Reid’s coaching tree includes Sean McDermott, Doug Pederson, Ron Rivera, Todd Bowles, Pat Shurmur, Leslie Frazier, Steve Spagnuolo, and Brad Childress. Clearly, not all of them have been successful, but it does include two Super Bowl winners and some long-time head coaches.

“Failed” head coaches are usually not exciting candidates, but if the Ravens choose to hire Nagy, he would inherit a better situation than he did with the Bears. Maybe that could change some things.
