Ravens' trade shakeup gives struggling defender a fresh shot to revive his career

It might be his last chance.

The Baltimore Ravens made one of the first big moves of the 2025 NFL season by trading outside linebacker Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick. The move initiates a reshuffling on the defensive side of the football, as Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr tries to get his unit headed in the right direction.

While the transaction should vastly improve the secondary, the pass rush room lacks depth now. Baltimore has tallied just six sacks this year, and while Oweh did not factor into those sack numbers, his presence will be missed. Without him, they will look for several young pass rushers to step into the role.

Rookie Mike Green is the obvious candidate to take over in Oweh’s absence. He was already cutting into the 26-year-old’s snaps, and should now become the primary pass rusher opposite of veteran Kyle Van Noy. The other defender expected to see more snaps is fourth-year pro David Ojabo.

Ojabo has had a disappointing NFL career up to this point, but with the Ravens having a shallow pass rush room entering their Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, he could be given a shot to revive his career.

David Ojabo given new life to revive his career after latest trade

Ojabo has played just 37 defensive snaps in 2025, and on only 13 of those, he has been able to display his pass-rush chops. He has posted a 58.2 overall grade, per Pro Football Focus, and has zero sacks and one QB hit. While the grades and stats are not encouraging, he has not been given a proper shot this year to showcase his abilities, and with the Oweh trade, that could be coming.

Ojabo slots as the fourth pass rusher on the depth chart. It is clear that the trio of Van Noy, Green, and Tavius Robinson will be the go-to guys, but as the team searches for extra juice, Ojabo will see an increase in opportunities.

The Michigan product was a star in college, tallying 11 sacks and 12 tackles for loss in his junior year. However, injuries to his Achilles and ACL have derailed his career. He has accounted for just four sacks in 21 NFL games, and given his lack of usage, it is looking like his time with the Ravens is up. He will have a chance to change that tune in the coming weeks, though.
