Teddye Buchanan is back. The Baltimore Ravens activated him off the PUP list on Friday, and he resumed practicing on Monday.

Buchanan was one of the only missing pieces left on defense. He suffered a torn ACL late last season, and while you’d expect that recovery to take a long time, head coach Jesse Minter has commended Buchanan’s quick progress.

“It’s always great when you get a guy back,” Minter said. “The first time I walked in this building, I think he was in here rehabbing…He’s put in the time and work. For a late-season injury, to be where he’s at now is a major credit to him and his mindset, his work ethic.”

Based on what we’re seeing in practice clips, things are looking up for Buchanan.

He really looks like himself again. That speed and aggressiveness that fans fell in love with are back on full display.

Baltimore Ravens could receive Teddye Buchanan-sized boost sooner rather than later

Teddye Buchanan is only ramping up right now. He’s not ready for full contact just yet. However, given how he looks in those drills, the Ravens could get him back sooner rather than later.

The most notable part of those clips is the fact that Buchanan isn't wearing any protective gear on his left knee—no brace and no sleeve. Clearly, that knee feels good, and seeing the pace he’s playing at, he’s giving himself an outstanding shot to be back in action, ready for the regular season.

In fact, at this point, it’d be a bit shocking if he’s not ready for the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on September 13. He has close to a full month of preparation to get set for in-game action. That’s plenty of time.

Minter also already had optimism in a Week 1 timeline, so Buchanan's return from the PUP list and Monday’s practice should only boost that confidence.

If Buchanan can continue this rapid progression, he’d be a gift for the Ravens defense. He took over the starting linebacker spot opposite of Roquan Smith in Week 2 of the 2025 campaign, and played better and better as the season went on. In 14 games, he was a lightning rod in the middle of the field, finishing third on the team with 93 combined tackles, while also notching a forced fumble and five tackles for loss.

It should only be up from here, too. Doing what Buchanan did as a fourth-round pick last year was incredible, but there were obviously moments where he was learning on the fly, specifically in coverage. With another year in the league, though, while simultaneously working under a much-improved defense led by Minter and Anthony Weaver, Buchanan may be cleared for takeoff in 2026.
