The Baltimore Ravens made one of the biggest blockbuster moves of free agency so far, signing Trey Hendrickson to a four-year, $112 million contract last week. The deal came about not even 24 hours after the Maxx Crosby debacle, where Baltimore backed out of the trade for medical reasons. It’s safe to say, fans are breathing a sigh of relief that Hendrickson will be coming to Charm City.
Hendrickson will undoubtedly be a monster on new head coach Jesse Minter’s defense, and Minter was in dire need of defensive line help this offseason. The Ravens lacked star power off the edge. They don’t anymore.
Still, Hendrickson does have struggles leak through in run defense. There few players who can rush the passer like he can, but his ability as a run defender can be a slight problem at times. Luckily, Baltimore already has a guy to help shut that down: Tavius Robinson.
Baltimore Ravens’ Tavius Robinson set to be perfect complement to Trey Hendrickson
Robinson’s versatility has always played a factor in the Ravens’ defensive front. He can line up as an edge rusher or play inside with his hand in the dirt. Give him a role, and he'll play it well. That valuable ability could be a game-changer when he takes the field alongside Hendrickson in 2026.
Robinson is not an explosive pass rusher by any means. He did have a career-best in sacks last season, but it was nothing crazy at 4.5 sacks. He does the dirty work as a nasty run defender, though. He’ll set a firm edge and consistently bring down ballcarriers as they try to knife through open gaps. He's as reliable as it gets as a tackler.
That relentless effort against the run has made Robinson one of the team’s unsung heroes. With a superstar in Hendrickson, who struggles a bit there, entering the building, that impact will be all the more important.
Hendrickson will bring down opposing quarterbacks. It comes naturally to him. He has 81 career sacks, and 74.5 of those have come in the last six seasons. He’s in the prime of his career and makes a living off of fourth-quarter sacks. He’s aging like a fine wine, and just as Robinson’s strong play as a run defender should ease that area up for Hendrickson, the 31-year-old’s deadly rush plan will uplift Robinson in pass rush situations.
The duo of Hendrickson and Robinson should make the new-look Minter defense operate like a well-oiled machine. Hendrickson will certainly overshadow Robinson, but every fan knows how crucial Robinson will be. With those two, along with the likes of Mike Green, Travis Jones, and hopefully Nnamdi Madubuike, taking the field together, the 30-sack group from last year should look far more well-rounded and explosive.
