The Baltimore Ravens drafting guard Vega Ioane at pick 14 looked like a home run move from the second the pick was announced. Baltimore got a blue-chip prospect at a position of need.

And while the proof will truly be in the pudding, all the early signs are amazing. One of these early signs is that Justin Melo of Sports Illustrated ranked Ioane as the ninth-best player in his way-too-early re-ranking of the top 50 players in the 2026 NFL Draft.

"Vega Ioane was our top-ranked interior prospect and nothing that's transpired since the draft changed that. In fact, we're infatuated with the landing spot in Baltimore, as he's a people-mover who will generate rushing lanes for Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. In Ioane, the Ravens are getting a perfect fit who embodies their culture and approach," Melo said.

Listen, ranking rookies before they've stepped foot on an NFL field should be taken with a grain of salt, but it's worth noting that Ioane moved up from his 13th ranking during the pre-draft process. This is a testament both to Ioane's general promise and his picture-perfect fit with the Ravens' system.

Without a doubt, drafting Ioane already looks like a genius move for Eric DeCosta and the Ravens.

Vega Ioane will uplift the Baltimore Ravens from the get-go

Last season, the Ravens guard duo of Daniel Faalele and Andrew Vorhees yielded disastrous results, especially in terms of pass protection. Faalele and Vorhees surrendered a combined 58 pressures according to Pro Football Focus. It was clear that this pairing was untenable as the Ravens tried to build a Super Bowl winner around Lamar Jackson.

And thankfully, Ioane is the perfect remedy for the problem. While at Penn State, he allowed just four pressures and zero sacks last season. Of course, the NFL is a different ball game. Ioane checks all the boxes to be not just an immediate contributor, but an immediate game-changer, in the mold of Quenton Nelson.

In addition to the value that Ioane provides as a pass protector, he will help open up opportunities in the Ravens' already dominant run game, as Melo noted. To this point, Ioane can simultaneously help the Ravens remain an elite run team and help them lean into a more explosive passing game. His presence will surely make life easier for Lamar.

Ioane was widely viewed as one of the safer prospects in the class. By all accounts, Ioane has an ideal combination of high floor and upside. Again, it's too early to tell for sure, but it looks like Ioane will deliver fantastic value for the Ravens.
