The Baltimore Ravens said the 2026 NFL Draft wasn’t enough. Even after bringing in a strong draft class with their 11 selections, and a haul of talented undrafted free agents on top of that, the organization wasn’t done searching for reinforcements.

On Thursday, the Ravens signed a game-changing reinforcement: veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell. Even going into his 19th NFL season at 39 years old, Campbell remains a force along the interior. He’s set to take a sizable snap share this coming season.

This likely wasn't the news that some of Baltimore’s young defensive linemen were hoping for. Specifically, Aeneas Peebles, C.J. Okoye, and Rayshaun Benny now find themselves not only in an uphill climb for snaps, but maybe even a roster spot. Things will be getting tougher for them in the months leading up to a pivotal 2026 campaign.

Baltimore Ravens send clear message to young defenders by signing Calais Campbell

On one hand, the addition of Campbell can be a good thing for players like Peebles, Okoye, and Benny. Campbell’s experience and leadership could prove invaluable to them as they learn the ropes and carve out a solid career. However, it’s a bit of a curse just as much as it’s a blessing. They may not have an opportunity to get the experience they need to develop in Charm City.

Peebles was already facing a challenge. He barely got any reps in his rookie year in 2025, and Baltimore added Benny in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, then quickly followed up by signing Campbell. As a player who will likely become a pass-rush-only option in the NFL, Peebles was already staring down a difficult pathway to snaps, and those additions only make it a rougher outlook.

Okoye has pretty much always been on the outside looking in. The hiring of Jesse Minter brought a slight glimmer of hope for him, though. He played under Minter in 2024 when he began his stint as defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Obviously, Okoye spent little time there, landing with the Ravens last year, but he re-signed with the team back in March. He could have a chance at a roster spot after all.

Although Benny was one of the last picks in this year’s draft, he’s gotten some high praise following the three-day event. People believe that he was a steal, and could quickly get a snap to prove his worth. The signing of Campbell doesn’t kill that dream, but it certainly puts a dent in it. He’ll have to play his way up the depth chart in training camp.

While each of Peebles, Okoye, and Benny are intriguing players, Campbell is going to come in and be a big-time contributor. The team won’t have to wait around at all. That puts the young trio at a disadvantage as we inch closer to the season.
