The Baltimore Ravens ensured that if anything happened to Lamar Jackson this year, they'd have a reliable backup to step in for him. That backup is Cooper Rush, who has spent all seven seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys and started 14 games for them.
This was a solid move for the Ravens considering Jackson's past injury history (though, fortunately, he's remained healthy the past two seasons) because Rush is capable of stepping in and helping Baltimore win games should Jackson have to miss some time. Obviously we hope to only see Rush on the field when the Ravens are blowing out another team but it's always smart to invest in the backup quarterback position.
After signing his new deal with the Ravens, Rush spoke about joining his new team and was excited about how it all played out.
"It kind of came out of nowhere, and [I] was super excited when my agent said the Ravens called," Rush said on The Lounge. "Obviously, from afar there in Dallas, you see the Ravens are a well-run, good organization. Obviously, tons of success, especially recently. So, I was like, wow, okay, this is sweet. It materialized, and here we are."
Cooper Rush excited to join well-run Ravens
Rush played for some decent Cowboys teams during his time there and while not many people consider win-loss records to be a quarterback stat, Rush had a 9-5 record in his 14 starts. Not bad for a perennial backup. Rush recognized that as well.
"It's really exciting to be on a good team," Rush said. "You get to 9–5, we had some good teams down there in Dallas, so you don't have to play out of yourself. You can play within yourself, do your job, rely on your teammates, and I think you have a similar situation here. Really good offense. Just kind of go do your job, get the ball to the fast guys, let them work, and do whatever you need to do to go win."
The Ravens have a good enough roster to where if Jackson missed a few games, they'd likely be okay with Rush at the helm because he's a good enough backup. That's why this was another great get for the Ravens' front office but let's hope fans never have to see Rush play in a meaningful game this season.
