A last-second Ravens move could shift final roster cuts

The Baltimore Ravens will have to cut down their roster soon, but they could make one more big acquisition before that happens.

Soon, following the final preseason game, the Baltimore Ravens will have to cut their roster down to 53 players. The brutal day, known as cut day, will see each NFL team cut nearly 40 players each. Teams have already started preparing for the day, trading away guys who they don’t see on their active roster.

While this time is all about getting rid of guys, the Ravens should be considering adding someone else. Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore is still available, and he’d be the perfect late-offseason pick up for Baltimore considering the health of their cornerback room.

Ravens should consider signing veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore

To be clear, this would be a luxury acquisition for Baltimore, and it would prompt other fan bases to accuse the Ravens of being greedy. Baltimore already has Marlon Humphrey and Jaire Alexander in the cornerback room, as well as an emerging Nate Wiggins. If the Ravens entered the season as is, they should be fine. However, a recent development should encourage them to add another corner just to be safe.

The recent development is Alexander’s health. The veteran corner has been missing practice with a knee injury, and while it’s not considered to be significant, history shows Baltimore should prepare for Alexander to miss games. He has only played seven games in each of his last two seasons, and that’s why the Green Bay Packers let him go.

If Alexander can put together a full season for the Ravens, it’d be great, but it doesn’t seem likely. That’s why Baltimore should get some extra insurance with Gilmore. The five-time Pro Bowler and 2019 Defensive Player of the Year is entering year 14 and is still playing at a starting caliber. The Ravens should get prepared for whatever and consider adding him to their secondary for the season.
