Mike Tomlin and 2 coaches Ravens fans wish would follow Belichick to NCAA
By Matt Sidney
For those who have been living under a rock, former longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is taking his NFL talents to the college game. Yup, you heard that right—Bill Belichick, the same Belichick who has won six Super Bowls, is heading to Chapel Hill to coach the UNC Tar Heels. This move has NFL fans buzzing, including Baltimore Ravens supporters who can’t help but imagine what life would be like if a few other NFL head coaches decided to follow Belichick’s lead.
The move comes as a big surprise to many NFL fans, but looking a little closer at it, it doesn't seem too farfetched. Belichick intends to run UNC as an NFL-type program. He's going to get the players ready just as he did when he worked for the Patriots.
Whether 18-year-olds want to be coached that way or not, there's something to be said about the approach. You can either buy into this truly being what he wants, or you can laugh it off as a means to stay relevant in the coaching sector. After all, what NFL jobs is he going to get? For this exercise, who cares? We're concerned about what other NFL head coaches we'd love to see get out of the Ravens' way and get their dorm posters ready for college.
Here are three other coaches Ravens fans would love to see head to follow Belichick to the NCAA.
Three NFL head coaches Ravens fans wished left and went to the NCAA
Andy Reid
This one is obvious. For so many reasons. Please get Andy Reid out of the NFL. He's become an unfair cheat code, editing his players to "99" on Madden, then taking the field and beating anybody and everybody.
League fans thought the reign of terror was over. "The Hoody" had mutually parted ways with the Patriots so the NFL could get back to its normal parity. Nope. Thanks, Andy. Ever since Belichick left, it's kept the door wide open for Reid to lead Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to seemingly every Super Bowl ever. Lamar Jackson is rendered useless against Reid, sporting a 1-4 record against the mustachioed genius.
How much better would life be for the Ravens if he decided he'd had enough dominating the NFL? There's plenty of good football being played around Kansas City. Why not explore something different? Please.
Mike MacDonald
Mike MacDonald was a phenomenal defensive coordinator for the Ravens. He steered the 2023 defense to several top spots along defensive team metrics. He did so well over his two-year stint, the Seattle Seahawks picked him up this past offseason to be their head coach—he's already doing extraordinary.
The reason why Ravens fans should hope he makes his way to Washington State or Eastern Washington is the comparisons fans will make between Harbaugh and MacDonald. If MacDonald's having success in Seattle (spoiler: he already is), fans will point to a massive missed opportunity by Baltimore to secure a young, talented head coach who could be dominating the league for decades.
But if he leaves, they won't. That would be pretty cool, seeing as though he's only 37 years old and looks every bit a long-term NFL head coach.
Mike Tomlin
Please, Mike, just leave. Get out of Lamar Jackson's way. It's honestly been really uncool for you to stick around and win as long as you have. What else does Tomlin have left to prove in the NFL?
Aside from being the thorniest of thorns in the Ravens' side for decades, he's also just a really cool guy and smart coach. How he interacts with his players and gets the most out of them is horrifically frustrating. On any given Sunday, some undrafted or late-round guy could put on the performance of a lifetime to seal a victory for the Steelers. And that stinks.
So, instead of getting the most out of his players in the NFL, some would say it'd be more impactful if he did that when they were more impressionable and in college. Up to you, Mike.
