NFC contender could steal Za'Darius Smith from under Ravens' beaks
By Matt Sidney
With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Baltimore Ravens have zeroed in on a potential game-changer for their defense: Za'Darius Smith. Baltimore’s front seven has struggled to generate consistent pressure this season, and adding Smith, who started his career with the Ravens, would be a major boost.
Smith’s versatility and ability to pressure the quarterback from both the edge and interior would give Baltimore exactly the edge presence they’ve lacked. However, there’s a big complication: the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions should have tons of interest in Za'Darius Smith
The Lions, a rising NFC contender, are reportedly on the lookout for an edge rusher. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently hinted on "Get Up" that Detroit could be gearing up for a move to replace injured star Aidan Hutchinson.
Head coach Dan Campbell has fueled this speculation, and with the Lions leading the NFC North, they’re likely to go all-in for the right pass-rushing addition. Smith is high on their list, and sending him to Detroit, rather than a division rival like Baltimore, may be far more appealing to Cleveland.
For the Ravens, Smith is a seamless fit.
He knows Baltimore’s system and could instantly impact their third-down defense, giving veteran Kyle Van Noy and young Odafe Oweh some needed help. But Detroit has the draft capital and motivation to make an enticing offer, especially with a clear path to the playoffs.
If the Lions secure Smith, Baltimore’s options grow thin. They’ll have to consider other former Ravens like Calais Campbell or Jadeveon Clowney, but neither would bring the same immediate impact.
Missing out on Smith could force Baltimore to find other ways to reinforce a defense that’s struggled to close out games and stay off the field.
The Ravens have made several moves to push for a deep playoff run this year, including adding wideout Diontae Johnson, but without another pass-rushing threat, they’re vulnerable. If Detroit steps up and beats Baltimore to Smith, the Ravens may find themselves regretting a missed opportunity to solidify their defense when it matters most.
