3 Ravens Training Camp battles officially declared by John Harbaugh
After six days of practice and the last two coming in full pads at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills, MD., head coach John Harbaugh and some of his acolytes took to the mics and officially declared three battles are ongoing at three different positions in the Baltimore Ravens roster.
The first week of practice finished on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium with both the offense and the defense winning one day each and the other two kinda split without a clear winner.
The first day in pads, last Monday, brought some more action to the training ground as the defensive line clearly won the day. On Tuesday, it looked like the offense and more than anything the wideouts, led by rookie Zay Flowers, reacted nicely and edged their counterparts.
Following practice, Harbaugh and some of his assistants touched on different battles currently being studied by the different coaches of the Ravens that could shape the final 53-man roster to be named later in August.
Here is what the staff members told the media after Tuesday, as reported by Clifton Brown of BaltimoreRavens.com.
Battle No. 1 - Cornerback: Will Rock Ya-Sin really take over the CB2 role?
The Las Vegas Raiders lost starting cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to the Baltimore Ravens this offseason as the latter decided to sign the veteran to deploy him opposite Marlon Humphrey.
That, at least, was the initial thought and belief around the Ravens organization. Now, though, things might be changing and Ya-Sin could have lost some ground in the race to take over the CB2 role.
Special teams coach Chris Hewitt said after Tuesday's practice that he "wants physical corners," and "that's what Rock is." That should mean the former Raider is sitting in pole position to become the CB2, right? Wrong!
As quoted by Brown, Hewitt followed up those comments with this: "We've got Rock, right now he's got the nod, but Jalyn Armour-Davis, he's pushing him as well."
Not only is JAD pushing hard to snatch that CB2 role from Ya-Sin, but all other corners not named Marlon should be in a position to at least try to do the same through the remainder of training camp.
"It's going to be a competition throughout the whole training camp," Hewitt continued. "We'll find out who comes out of there."
