Baltimore Ravens: Projecting a extension for Patrick Queen
When the Baltimore Ravens drafted Trenton Simpson many fans were convinced that the team would be moving on from Patrick Queen after this season. They declined his fifth-year option, which only made this more likely. However, the Ravens brass has said that they believe they can get a deal done with Queen before he is set to leave.
Baltimore Ravens: Projecting a extension for Patrick Queen
If we are to believe the Ravens at their word, what would an extension look like between the team and Patrick Queen?
Some recent players to sign extensions include Jerome Baker, Foye Oluokun, TJ Edwards, DeVondre Campbell, and Bobby Okereke. Below you can see how the group compares to Patrick Queen. The stats are since Queen has entered the NFL to give a similar sample.
Name | Tackles | QB Hits | TFL | Sacks | FF | INT | Run Stop Rate | Yards per snap |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jerome Baker | 304 | 33 | 22 | 16.5 | 4 | 1 | 11% | 0.93 |
Patrick Queen | 321 | 27 | 28 | 10 | 4 | 3 | 12.5% | 1.11 |
Foye Oluokun | 493 | 25 | 20 | 7 | 7 | 5 | 14% | 1.06 |
TJ Edwarda | 359 | 9 | 20 | 5 | 2 | 2 | 11.5% | 0.75 |
Devondre Campbell | 341 | 9 | 19 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 10.1% | 0.95 |
Bobby Okereke | 345 | 3 | 13 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 11.4% | 1.10 |
Queen is right in the middle with the others. Another factor is that Queen will be 25 when he enters his first year with his new team, while the youngest player to sign an extension on this list is 27 years old. Beyond that, Queen is one of the best in terms of sacks, forced fumbles, and interceptions. So, the big plays are going his way.
On the flip side, he is one of the worst in coverage, and Baltimore Ravens fans know that well. We will see how that outweighs these other positives.
Still, he does not stand apart in a big way from any of these names. You can see the names we noted and how their contracts look compared to each other. Then, there is an average.
Name | Years | Average Annual Value | GTD |
---|---|---|---|
Jerome Baker | 3 | $12.5M | $28.4M |
Bobby Okereke | 4 | $10M | $21.8M |
Foye Oluokun | 3 | $15M | $28M |
TJ Edwards | 3 | $6.5M | $7.9M |
Devondre Campbell | 5 | $10M | $15M |
Average | 3.6 | $10.8M | $20.2M |
The first takeaway is that T.J. Edwards signed a bargain of a deal this offseason. Teams are going to hope that shows in the market next year, but Patrick Queen will be the test.
The average deal listed is about in-line with Bobby Okereke, who also signed a deal just last offseason. They have very similar stats, and Okereke even had the coverage stats in question. With the rising cap and the age of Patrick Queen, you could probably set the bar for Queen at Okereke, and think that a little bump in pay would be all that he needs.
If the Baltimore Ravens offered Patrick Queen a four-year, $44M deal with $22M in guarantees, would that be what Queen is looking for? Or, for Ravens fans, are they hoping that Queen gets offered this elsewhere next offseason, knowing that this will help the compensatory formula?
