Was the Broderick Washington contract a fair value for Baltimore Ravens?
The Baltimore Ravens signed Broderick Washington to a three-year contract extension for $17.5M. On the surface, it was a move that had to be done. Still, it is worth wondering if the team did get fair enough value for the contract.
When we broke down a possible extension for Washington this summer, it came to $13.5M over three years, which is a slight increase from $4.5 in average annual salary compared to the $5.8M he saw. $1.3M per year will not change much, but it is worth wondering if they could have done better.
Below are the contracts we looked into in comparison to Washington.
Years | AAV | GTD | |
---|---|---|---|
Teair Tart | 1 | $4.3M | |
Rakeem Nunez-Roches | 3 | $4M | $7.5M |
Khalen Saunders | 3 | $4.1M | $6.6M |
Shy Tuttle | 3 | $6.5M | $13M |
Mike Purcell | 3 | $3.8M | $6.8 |
Broderick Washington | 3 | $5.8 | $10M |
Compared to these names, Washington is one of the biggest money makers, just behind Shy Tuttle. It is fair that he is younger, and the last one to get paid does usually make the most. Still, when you compare Washington to these names, you thought he would be closer to their tier of salary.
Total Tackles | Hits+TFL | Sacks | Pressure rate | Run Stop Rate | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Broderick Washington | 67 | 11 | 2 | 5.44% | 8.33% |
Rakeem Nunez-Roches | 70 | 15 | 2 | 4.34% | 6.34% |
Mike Purcell | 93 | 11 | 2.5 | 3.49% | 8.83% |
Teair Tart | 55 | 18 | 1.5 | 6.36% | 6.98% |
Shy Tuttle | 125 | 11 | 2 | 4.1% | 8.96% |
Khalen Saunders | 59 | 11 | 3.5 | 4.78% | 9.37% |
Tuttle has a lot more tackles than Washington, but the rest of the production is pretty similar. Pointing to Tuttle, the age of Washington, and the rising salary cap are all reasons to see him getting more than $4.5M per year.
However, now he goes from a tier with Teair Tart and Rakeem Nunez-Roches into a grouping with Justin Jones, Bryan Mone, Bilal Nichols, and Nathan Shepherd. These are the closest salaries to Washington at this point.
Years | AAV | GTD | |
---|---|---|---|
Broderick Washington | 3 | $5.8M | $10M |
Justin Jones | 2 | $6M | $9M |
Bryan Mone | 2 | $5.5M | $1.5M |
Bilal Nichols | 2 | $5.5M | $9.5M |
Nathan Shepherd | 3 | $5M | $10.2M |
You can see that he is much closer to these names. The only one that did not get guarantees in the same range is Mone.
As you can see below, the production may be why. Mone is also the only name with production similar to Broderick Washington.
Total Tackles | Hits+TFL | Sacks | Pressure rate | Run Stop Rate | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Broderick Washington | 67 | 11 | 2 | 5.44% | 8.33% |
Justin Jones | 123 | 38 | 7 | 5.91% | 8.49% |
Bryan Mone | 69 | 9 | 2 | 5.29% | 6.15% |
Bilal Nichols | 135 | 49 | 9.5 | 7.10% | 7.54% |
Nathan Shepherd | 78 | 29 | 4 | 7.58% | 5.70% |
Those two could arguably have the same salary. When you add in the Shy Tuttle deal, you can understand where the Ravens came from. However, every other player is more productive and brings more in the passing game.
Broderick Washington is relying on being better in the run game than most of the others, as well as being younger. However, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols are actually about the same age as Washington as well. Washington is making about the same as both but has not produced as well as either.
The Baltimore Ravens are making a bit of a bet here. There seems to be a defensive lineman who can be said for $4-$5M every year, and if you play it right, you can find a value better than Washington for less than him. The team has reasons to sign him, but you have to wonder if they could saved about a million dollars or if Washington turned down any offers before this.
