The Baltimore Ravens are likely going to approach Justin Madubuike about an extension this offseason. Madubuike is in the final year of his rookie deal, and while they could play this season out, it does open the door to him hitting the open market this offseason and leaving. The Ravens may want to lock him down before that is possible, and he may like getting the security of the new money before another season where an injury could occur.
So, if the Baltimore Ravens do offer Justin Madubuike an extension, what would it look like?
Projecting a Justin Madubuike contract extension with Baltimore Ravens
Some recent defensive linemen to sign extensions in the last year or so are David Onyemata, Dalvin Tomlinson, Zach Allen, DJ Reader, and Davon Hamilton. Below you can see how each of those players compares to each other. We used their stats since 2020, which is when Madubuike entered the NFL.
Name | Tackles | Sacks | TFL | Approximite Value | Pressures/Snap | Run stop/snap |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
David Onyemata | 121 | 13.5 | 17 | 15 | 8.6% | 9.6% |
Dalvin Tomlinson | 130 | 8.5 | 13 | 21 | 6.5% | 8.6% |
Zach Allen | 130 | 11.5 | 20 | 16 | 6.9% | 9.4% |
Justin Madubuike | 97 | 8.5 | 17 | 15 | 6.4% | 9.8% |
DJ Reader | 89 | 2 | 5 | 15 | 7.7% | 8.2% |
Davon Hamlton | 132 | 4.5 | 9 | 13 | 7% | 8.2% |
Madubuike does not have the best tackle numbers, and while his sacks are closer to the middle of the packe, his pressures per snap are low. Still, he is right near the majority of them in Approximate Value, and his run stopping numbers are as good as any of them. He is second in tackles for loss, and best in run stops per snap.
So, he will not set the bar for the best contract amongst these names, but this is fair range to start looking. What are the salaries of those players?
Name | Years | AAV | GTD |
---|---|---|---|
Davon Hamilton | 3 | $11.5M | $20M |
David Onyemata | 3 | $11.7M | $24.5M |
DJ Reader | 4 | $13.3M | $20.3M |
Dalvin Tomlinson | 4 | $14.3M | $27.5M |
Zach Allen | 3 | $15.3M | $32.3M |
Average | 3.4 | $13.2 | $24.9M |
Zach Allen leads the pack. What is impressive with him is that his run defense numbers are close to Madubuike, but his other numbers are also better. With pass rush being more valued, it maks sense that he got more than Madubuike likely will see.
Onyeamata and Davon Hamtilon do have better tackle numbers, but for the most part you can compare them favorable to Madubuike. They signed relatively similar deals too.
Since the cap is rising, and we can see that he rushes the passer better than DJ Reader, the Ravens will probably want to offer something in the $12M per year range.
If the Baltimore Ravens offered Justin Madubuike a three-year, $38M extension with $24M in guarantees, would that be a deal that both sides agree to and move forward with? Which side would be against those numbers?
