Ravens coaches "not concerned" after losing Calais Campbell

In the first training camp practice in pads, the Baltimore Ravens defense got the better of the offense again as players bulked up on Monday, July 31, at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills, Md.

That defensive unit, of course, won't have one of their main staples of years past in 2023 after they let go of Calais Campbell this offseason with the veteran moving on to sign a deal with the Atlanta Falcons.

In a report from camp written by Ryan Mink for BaltimoreRavens.com on Monday following the first practice of the week, the Ravens reporter highlighted how "the defensive line had a day," but most interestingly he acknowledged that such a performance "showed why coaches are not concerned about a drop-off after losing Calais Campbell."

Mink went on to discuss the fine performances of multiple players part of the Ravens D-Unit entering 2023. Here are some of the things Mink wrote about them following Monday's training session.

On DT Justin Madubuike: "Stood out... Curled RB Justice Hill as he was trying to rip the ball out of his hands... bullied his way into the backfield for what would have been back-to-back sacks."

On ILB Patrick Queen: "Got the biggest pad crack of the practice when he ran across the field to pop Hill near the sideline."

On EDGE Odafe Oweh and David Ojabo: "Continued their strong practice play... Ojabo teamed up with Madubuike for another sack."

On ILB Trenton Simpson: "Flashed his speed and physicality, catching wide receiver James Proche II from behind to shove him out of bounds... Thumped running back Melvin Gordon III when working on blocking."

On OLB Malik Hamm: "Put undrafted guard Tykeem Doss on his butt with a nasty long arm move."

The Ravens' offense might be the unit with the biggest additions made by the front office through the spring and early summer months, but that doesn't mean the defense has fallen behind by any means judging by the first practices at Owings Mills.
