Ravens OC Todd Monken: "That's a fun little toy right there, isn't it?"
The Ravens took the field for Day 3 of training camp on Friday with one notable player missing the session and no prior announcement of such absence. Of course, given his exploits earlier this week, it took beat reporters and fans present at Owings Mills no time to realize.
Zay Flowers was the missed man and although HC John Harbaugh wasn’t scheduled to talk on Friday, it was later revealed that Flowers was missing practice with an illness according to Jeff Zrebiec, having sustained no physical injury. Dodged bullet!
The rookie receiver, though, got another funny label when new Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken called him "a fun little toy," as quoted by Luke Jones of Baltimore Positive.
Speaking after practice on Friday, Monken told reporters "That's a fun little toy right there, isn’t it?"
The new OC of Baltimore was referring to first-round pick Zay Flowers, who has thrived in his short time as a member of the Ravens franchise and through OTAs, minicamp, and training camp. "I’m just fired up Eric [DeCosta] and the boys drafted [Zay Flowers]," he said according to Matthew Lenix of A to Z Sports.
Flowers recently appeared on the Ravens' official podcast, The Lounge, and he was so excited about his role in Baltimore's revamped offense ahead of the 2023 season.
The rookie was told if he'd keep playing in all three X, Z, and F positions in the regular season, to which he replied "That's what I want. That's exactly what I want."
Flowers thinks that "As long as I'm touching the ball, I feel like I can make a play from anywhere, no matter where it is."
Speaking about the new Ravens OC, Flowers said that "[Monken's] offense allows everyone to be able to get the ball. Just spread everybody out, move pieces around, and get everybody open," which is seemingly right up Flowers' alley.
"I just want to touch the ball. I don't care how," Flowers finished.
