Where AFC North stars rank following uninspiring Week 2
By Matt Sidney
Another week, another AFC North no-show. Aside from the uninspiring wins from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, this division really had nothing great happen. The Baltimore Ravens lost their home opener to the Las Vegas Raiders after surrendering 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The Cincinnati Bengals lost a nail-biter on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Overall, this division screams mediocrity. There haven't been many reasons to celebrate or moments to be excited about. There are more questions than answers right now. It's difficult to project where these teams will be at season's end.
We can expect intense moments and star play from some of the game's best. See updated AFC North player rankings as we move forward each week. Here are last week's rankings.
Every AFC North team's stat leader after Week 2
Passing leaders
For whatever reason, the AFC North has been struggling offensively early on in the 2024 NFL season. The passing attacks for all four teams feel underwhelming and predictable. It's rather unfortunate seeing as though there is immense talent throughout the AFC North. Jackson leads all by a decent margin after a decent passing game against the Raiders.
However, expect Joe Burrow to challenge Lamar as the season continues. There are severe question marks surrounding Deshaun Watson and Justin Fields as it pertains to their impact on the game.
Player | Passing yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Lamar Jackson (BAL) | 520 | 2 |
Joe Burrow (CIN) | 422 | 2 |
Deshaun Watson (CLE) | 355 | 1 |
Justin Fields (PIT) | 273 | 1 |
Rushing leaders
This is typically a division that fields elite ground attacks and running games. For the most part, the 2024 season has seen similar results. Lamar Jackson continues to shoulder the Baltimore offense while running backs Najee Harris of Pittsburgh and Jerome Ford of Cleveland lurk closely behind.
The ground game will go through Baltimore this season. Someone will have to step up and beat the ever-electric Lamar Jackson, which, at this point, looks very difficult.
Player | Rushing yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Lamar Jackson (BAL) | 167 | 0 |
Najee Harris (PIT) | 139 | 0 |
Jerome Ford (CLE) | 108 | 1 |
Zack Moss (CIN) | 78 | 1 |
Receiving leaders
The AFC North quarterbacks have had a hard time moving the ball through the air. Regardless, the top two receivers from Week 1 remain the same while the bottom two see new faces. In comes new Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki and new Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy. Both players were brought in to bring new elements to their respective offenses. So far, so good as they'll look to bring this newfound momentum into Week 3.
Player | Receiving yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Isaiah Likely (BAL) | 137 | 1 |
George Pickens (PIT) | 114 | 0 |
Mike Gesicki (CIN) | 109 | 0 |
Jerry Jeudy (CLE) | 98 | 1 |
Sack leaders
The AFC North flexed some of its muscle this past weekend in the sack department. The big names came alive and took care of business. Every team's premier pash rusher got in on the action and it's setting up to be a very interesting race for the top spot.
Ravens linebacker Odafe Oweh solidified himself as an official breakout candidate with his performance against the Raiders while Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, Steelers defensive end T.J. Watt, and Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson all added to their season totals as well.
Player | Sacks |
---|---|
Odafe Oweh (BAL) | 2.5 |
Myles Garrett (CLE) | 2.0 |
T.J. Watt (PIT) | 2.0 |
Trey Hendrickson (CIN) | 2.0 |
