With the NFL preseason officially starting this week, the league has reached the point of the calendar when teams are having joint practices with each other. Naturally, that means fights between two teams. Sure enough, that was the case during Tuesday’s joint practice between the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts.
Ahead of their preseason game on Thursday, the Colts came to town early for a practice with the Ravens. During that practice, Ravens corner Keyon Martin reportedly pushed an Indianapolis player after the whistle. The Colts player then retaliated, which led to Baltimore corner Nate Wiggins running onto the field and quickly throwing multiple punches.
First fight of Ravens-Colts joint practice just occurred. Ravens backup CB Keyon Martin delivered a late push on a Colts player. When the Colts player retaliated, Nate Wiggins ran off the sideline and delivered several upper cuts. Both sidelines cleared.

Both sidelines cleared, but things were able to get under control quickly. However, Wiggins was thrown out of practice, presumably for being the one to initially leave the sideline and throw punches.

While these fights are always frowned upon, they are also par for the course. Teams know it’s a high possibility a fight will breakout when two opposing teams have to share a field in the middle of training camp. Veteran fullback Patrick Ricard gave some insight into that prior to Tuesday’s practice reflecting on a fight the two teams had the last time they had a joint practice.
"Guys are fighting for their jobs, their livelihoods. Things end up getting chippy. You don't really know the guy. Tempers flare. I think the last time we had a joint practice against the Colts, we had a full team brawl. Hopefully that doesn't happen again."Patrick Ricard
Knowing it was likely that tempers would eventually flare, both teams decided to just have one joint practice. Before what happened on Tuesday, head coach John Harbaugh explained how Baltimore used to do two joint practices, but since the second day was usually “just a chippy day — a cheap shot day,” the teams decided to have just one practice before meeting for the preseason game.
Turns out they made the right decision.
