The Baltimore Ravens' Week 4 match-up against the Kansas City Chiefs went about as poorly as it could have gone. Not only did the Ravens lose the game, they got curb-stomped by a Chiefs team that hadn't looked impressive in the first three weeks.
While Lamar Jackson did what he could, the offense did not play well overall in this loss. Sure the defense was hot garbage as its been all year but for the first time this season, the Ravens offense didn't look lethal at all.
John Harbaugh was not happy with his offense's performance on Sunday and made sure to put the entire unit on blast while speaking with the media. From the playcall on Jackson's pick to whatever the heck that was on the 4th-and-1 attempt to the lack of handling the Chiefs' many blitzes, Harbaugh spoke about all of it and was not pleased with his team's efforts.
John Harbaugh puts Ravens offense on blast after poor performance vs. Chiefs
Things started off on a great note for Baltimore's offense, as the unit moved down the field and scored a touchdown with ease. Fans probably thought this was going to be a fun day of football (at least on offense) but that ended up being it as far as fun moments from the game.
On the next drive, the Ravens were on the Chiefs' 32-yard line when Jackson threw a pick on 1st-and-10 on a pass that was intended for Mark Andrews. Harbaugh hated the playcall and didn't hesitate to sound off about it.
"It wasn't a good play call. It wasn't a play where we put our guys in the right position in that situation. I'm not happy with it at all. None of us are. They ran a double-backer blitz inside where they were right in Lamar's face. We had downfield routes with no check-downs. ... That kills your drive and you're moving the ball right down the field. So, no, I don't like that play call at all."
In the second quarter with the Ravens trailing 13-7, the team reached their own 41-yard line and opted to go for it on 4th-and-1. Fans probably weren't mad about that decision (and neither was Harbaugh) but the call there was questionable at best. Rather than run the ball, something the Ravens tend to do quite well, Jackson dropped back to pass and threw an incomplete pass down the field.
"We didn't do a good job at all and we all know it. We agree with that. We came up short. We didn't put our players in a position we needed to put them in to execute and convert on third-and-short and fourth-and-short. Those are just like turnovers. They're no different than turnovers because you put your defense on a short field. We just gotta own all that. It's bad ball."
To their credit, the Chiefs defense did a nice job against Jackson, Henry, and the entire Ravens offense and it showed. Harbaugh acknowledged that and called his team out for not having the right approach.
"I don't think our approach was good. We didn't stick to the plan we had. We had an idea of how we wanted to approach their defense, and we didn't stick to it, and I'm not happy about it and neither is anybody. None of our coaches are happy about it, especially, I'm talking about the coaches right now. That was us. It was not a good job."
Now look, the Ravens offense has been tasked with carrying this team in the first month of the season due to how atrocious the defense has looked. Injuries have hurt both sides of the ball as well and Jackson didn't have a good offensive line protecting him, proven by the Chiefs' three sacks and eight QB hits.
That being said, when you have a generational quarterback like Jackson, the offense around him has to be better. You can't waste the prime years of Jackson and that's exactly what the Ravens are doing right now. They have to get things figured out on offense at the very least or this will be a lost year for this Baltimore Ravens squad.
