The Baltimore Ravens have just landed the plane on one of the most chaotic series of events in NFL history. After agreeing to a bombshell trade for Maxx Crosby and subsequently backing out of that trade, they have landed Trey Hendrickson in free agency. Eric DeCosta and the Ravens may look like villains in this saga, but they got their edge rusher in the end.
To make matters even better for Baltimore, Hendrickson's reported contract looks like a steal. The four-year, $112 million-dollar deal comes in lower than many experts expected.
Hate on DeCosta all you want, but he got this one right.
Trey Hendrickson contract proves Ravens right after Maxx Crosby drama
The Ravens clearly entered this offseason with one goal at the top of their list: Add a premier pass rusher, no matter what. For a few days, it looked like Crosby was their answer. Of course, just after the dust settled, they pulled the rug out from under the entire league by backing out of the deal due to medical concerns.
Reactions to the drama have been mixed, but if the team's doctors weren't comfortable with the defender's medical status, it's hard to blame Baltimore for cancelling the deal.
Once the trade was nixed, DeCosta made quick work of finding an alternative. Hendrickson was the top edge rusher on the free agent market this offseason. He had multiple suitors vying for his signature. Many experts expected him to sign for at least $30 million per year.
Instead, the Ravens brought him in for just $28 million per year. Hendrickson has been one of the most productive pass rushers in football over the last few years. He posted back-to-back seasons with 17.5 sacks in 2023 and 2024. His numbers dipped in 2025 due largely to an injury that kept him sidelined, but there's reason to believe that he still has the same capacity for dominance. If he can return to the form fans saw in previous years, this deal will end up looking like a bargain for the Ravens.
DeCosta may be the villain of the NFL at the moment for his last-second cancellation of the biggest trade of the offseason. But it seems like he avoided the risk of taking on a potentially injured player in favor of adding an uber-productive star at the same position. Like it or not, the Ravens are the clear winners in this saga.
