The Baltimore Ravens are just starting to get adjusted to the Jesse Minter era. The team’s offseason program brought even more excitement for what’s to come, and for both players and coaches, it sounds like OTAs and minicamp were a success. Next up: training camp.
While offseason workouts brought just a glimmer of what Minter will provide, training camp will reveal so much more. It’s a pivotal part of the offseason, as it’s a time where players can ramp up the intensity and make lasting impressions on the coaching staff.
Guys like Vega Ioane find themselves in a spot where they need to make an impact early. And for these other three Ravens, the time might be now to earn reps and blossom into a key piece ahead of 2026.
Baltimore Ravens players with defining opportunities in training camp
Vega Ioane
Vega Ioane will be an instant starter in his rookie campaign. The Ravens wouldn’t have drafted him with the 14th overall pick otherwise. However, with the way the team’s offensive line situation has developed this offseason, Ioane needs to scale the learning curve quickly.
Baltimore lost Tyler Linderbaum in free agency, and although they signed John Simpson to play opposite Ioane, he isn’t much better than a slightly above-average guard when he’s at his best. Ioane might need to hit the ground running if the Ravens want to have success in 2026. He’s the new centerpiece of the offensive line, and must do his part in keeping Lamar Jackson upright and healthy.
Training camp will be Ioane’s first taste of real NFL action. The trenches can actually get into the swing of things, so we’ll get to see what Ioane is made of.
Jovaughn Gwyn
Staying on topic with the offensive line, Jovaughn Gwyn is in the high-stakes competition to replace Tyler Linderbaum. He’s battling veteran Danny Pinter for the job, and while it remains an open competition, it sounds like Pinter might hold the edge at this point. That makes Gwyn the one with a bit more to gain in late July.
Gwyn couldn’t have chosen a better destination in free agency. He followed his offensive line coach, Dwayne Ledford, to Charm City, and that relationship will certainly give him a strong chance to win the center job. However, nothing is going to be given to him on a silver platter. He must earn it.
Gwyn is an unknown, as he’s played just 11 snaps in his three-year career. He can introduce himself with a strong training camp, though. If he makes a statement, he could quickly plant his stake as the go-to guy to snap the football to Lamar Jackson this season.
Zion Young
Everyone is itching to see what Zion Young will do when the pads go on and contact is permitted at training camp. He’s the type of rookie that plays like his hair is on fire on every single snap, and the mentality he brings to the field is a complete game-changer. He craves physicality, and pretty soon, he’ll get the green light.
Young was impossible to miss during Baltimore’s offseason program. It felt like every day he was making headlines. He was pushing all the right buttons, and in an edge rusher room that has quickly become pretty crowded at the top this offseason, the Missouri product is going to need to keep firing on all cylinders.
As a stout run defender, Young’s main roadblock for reps will be Tavius Robinson. That’s not to say they both can’t see the field; Jesse Minter is going to ensure he gets every bit of talent out of every player. But if Young can continue to dominate and make plays, then more snaps may be coming his way. The energy he brings to the table is infectious, and if it translates into production, you simply have to put him on the field.
Rashod Bateman
While the other guys here are names looking to prove themselves and secure major roles on the depth chart, Rashod Bateman finds himself in a bit of a different situation this offseason. He put together a drastic campaign that saw him struggle after signing an extension in the 2025 offseason. He put up just 19 receptions, 224 yards, and two touchdowns. That’s not going to cut it.
Bateman is in the pressure cooker after this offseason, too. The Ravens appear ready to let Devontez Walker loose, and they also drafted two wideouts within the first four rounds in Ja’Kobi Lane and Elijah Sarratt. Bateman’s contract obviously makes him a shoo-in for a starting role, but if he comes out sluggish to start the year, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that he quickly loses reps.
In 2024, Bateman showcased impressive abilities to stretch the field and find the end zone. We need to see that return in 2026. If he can’t get the engine started in training camp, the path may become that much clearer for guys like Walker, Lane, and Sarratt to start taking advantage.
