The Baltimore Ravens roster was trimmed to 75 players early Monday as the team made moves to meet NFL requirements ahead of Tuesday’s 4 pm deadline.  None of the moves are shocking, though there are some notable names on the list.  Here is a rundown of all the roster moves the Ravens made Monday.

Waived

  • Omar Brown, safety
  • Richie Leone, punter
  • David Mims, offensive tackle
  • Nick DiMarco, outside linebacker
  • Marrio Norman, cornerback
  • Deji Olatoye, cornerback
  • LaQuan Williams, wide receiver
  • Austin Spitler, linebacker
  • Mike Willie, wide receiver
  • Cierre Wood, running back

Waived/Injured

  • Shaun Chapas, fullback
  • Brett Van Sloten, offensive tackle

Injured Reserve

  • Brent Urban, defensive end (knee)
  • Kapron Lewis-Moore, defensive end (Achilles)
  • Will Rackley, guard (concussion)

None of the roster moves were unexpected or surprising.  Of the fifteen players listed above, none were listed on our final roster predictions.  Any potential surprises will likely come later in the week when final cuts are announced.

LaQuan Williams was a member of the Raven’s 2012 Super Bowl winning team, but didn’t make final cuts last year or first cuts this year.  The wide receiver competition is still wide open after the team cut Williams and Mike Willie, who get the axe ahead of Jeremy Butler and Jace Davis.

Omar Brown was also on the 2012 Super Bowl squad, but spent half of last year on the practice squad and appeared in only one game.  Brown couldn’t beat out fellow safeties Brynden Trawick or Anthony Levine for a spot on the roster, in spite of his reputation for being a “ball hawk.”

Leone was brought in as a former Ray Guy award semifinalist to provide competition for incumbent starter Sam Koch, but Koch has played well thus far in the preseason.  He is entering his ninth year with the team.

Rackley hasn’t practiced since the first day of training camp after suffering a concussion.  With the depth the Ravens currently have along the offensive line, the team didn’t need to keep him around.

Cierre Wood was a coveted undrafted rookie free agent last offseason who landed the third running back spot with the Texans last season.  After getting arrested for smoking marijuana in the team’s hotel room during a road trip, he was waived.  Cutting Wood speaks volumes about the team’s confidence in Bernard Pierce overcoming the concussion he suffered Saturday night.

The Ravens have until 4 pm on Saturday to cut an additional 22 players to arrive at the 53 player max for the regular season.  They play their fourth and final preseason game Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints.
