As the Baltimore Ravens get set to solidify perhaps their weakest unit on an otherwise championship-worthy team via the draft and free agency, the team is beginning the process by taking care of some matters in house.  According to the Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson, that means resigning safety Jeromy Miles.

A career special teamer, the incredible onslaught of injuries suffered by the Ravens’ secondary in 2014 gave Miles the opportunity to log some major snaps on defense.  Appearing in every game and starting two, Miles recorded 23 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.  He also graded out as Pro Football Focus’ 23rd ranked safety out of 87.

Resigning Jeromy Miles is an underrated move that will help shore things up at a position of weakness for the Ravens.  After looming draft bust Matt Elam failed to capitalize on a tremendous opportunity last season, the team has a dire need at the position.  Darian Stewart is an impending free agent coming off a very up and down season, and Will Hill is a restricted free agent.

Miles outplayed all of them last season with the exception of Hill (14th ranked safety by PFF).  He even beat out much more ballyhooed names like T.J. Ward, Bernard Pollard, Tyrann Mathieu, and Troy Polamalu.  By locking him up now, the Ravens are getting a still-young player with what appears to be great potential on the cheap.
