Teams face a conundrum every year when it comes to deciding on roster spots. Depth at every position is good, but some positions require less than others.  You won’t find too many teams carrying multiple punters, for example.  But there is great debate over how many quarterbacks at team should carry, and for good reason.

Some teams have durable quarterbacks who play behind great offensive lines. Some are great at avoiding contact by moving or getting rid of the ball.  Some coaches feel comfortable carrying two QB’s on the roster, while others prefer three.

The Ravens drafted Keith Wenning because he is a good fit for Gary Kubiak’s system and because they are unsatisfied with Tyrod Taylor’s development.

While it isn’t out of the question that your top two guys can get hurt (it has happened), it isn’t terribly likely.  The Ravens are lucky to have a durable guy in Joe Flacco, but he did take a pretty good beating last season.  Which we think was a bit of a wakeup call, as the team seems to be a bit unsatisfied lately with backup Tyrod Taylor.

It is quite likely that the Ravens will cut Taylor and carry two quarterbacks as they did last season.  The question is, will they be confident enough in sixth round rookie Keith Wenning’s ability to run the offense by the end of the preseason? His development is an important component here.

Wenning is more of a developmental passer who may need more time in the system to earn the number two job.  He possesses poise and toughness and is proficient with underneath routes.  He lacks a big arm, but has the physical and mental tools to be a solid long term backup.

Although sixth round picks get cut every year, it doesn’t seem likely to happen in this case.  The Ravens drafted Keith Wenning because he is a good fit for Gary Kubiak’s system and because they are unsatisfied with Tyrod Taylor’s development.  They need a solid backup who can fill in admirably if Flacco does indeed miss time.

Considering these factors, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Ravens kept three quarterbacks this season.  If Wenning picks up the offense quickly and shows well in the preseason, however, Taylor could find himself on free agent market after final cuts.

Who do you think will be Joe Flacco’s backup this season?
