The draft process for an NFL team is a long and tedious one.  Scouts keep their eyes peeled on college players year round even though the actual hype begins shortly after the NFL’s regular season ends.  We are headed into full blown draft season, an exciting time that reaches its peak when teams are officially on the clock beginning April 30th.

This year we are tracking every player that the Baltimore Ravens talk to or reportedly show interest in. Whether it be a workout, interview, team visit, or simply a rumored bit of interest, we are going to cover them all.  We’ll take a look at each prospect and discuss whether or not that particular player might represent a good pick for the Ravens.

The Ravens may be stacked at the linebacker position, but they are getting a little long in the tooth on the outside.  With Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil both on the wrong side of 30, it’s time for the team to start thinking about the future at the position.  They may not spend a high draft pick on a linebacker this year, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they look for one later on.

Louisville’s Lorenzo Mauldin could be a guy that fits the bill as a projected third round pick.  Though he did most of his damage in college as a defensive end, Mauldin lined up at outside linebacker for the Senior Bowl.  A confident and tough guy with high football character, Lorenzo Mauldin has a reputation for never quitting on a play.

Mauldin possesses some desirable pass rush skills and has impressive straight line speed.  He has a history of being productive against the run as well, showing great awareness and change of direction skills.  Viewed as a 3-4 rush linebacker, Mauldin would also fit as a situational pass rusher in a 4-3 defense.

Mauldin’s weaknesses consist of his upright playing style and lack of thickness in his lower body.  His lack of size and leverage could pose a problem defending against NFL size running backs.  Regardless, this is a guy with a reputation of being incredibly mentally tough after overcoming a hard childhood. He has the desire to be great, coupled with a history of productive play and a bevy of pass rush skills.
