Yesterday it was all about tight ends and offensive linemen, and today it’s all about running backs (and a hybrid WR/TE) at the 2015 NFL Combine for the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are reportedly meeting with running backs Melvin Gordon, Duke Johnson, and David Johnson, along with tight end/wide receiver Devin Funchess.
Gordon and current Ravens running backs coach Thomas Hammock are already quite familiar with each other, as Hammock was Gordon’s position coach at Wisconsin until last season, when he joined the Ravens staff. He is widely considered a top two back in this year’s draft and is projected to go in the first or second round.
Let’s take a look at each of these prospects and their scouting notes, along with some highlights from their respective college careers.
Melvin Gordon
Generally regarded as the top running back in the 2015 draft class, thanks to Todd Gurley’s recovery from an ACL tear. Gordon is a talented open field runner with outstanding burst and a long stride. He was highly productive in college but needs to improve his pass catching to become a true three down NFL back.
Duke Johnson
One of the most explosive playmakers in college football during his time at Miami, Johnson is explosive and elusive. He has true NFL speed and playmaking ability along with a one-cut style that should earn him immediate playing time in the pros. He needs work in pass protection and has a history of injuries, however.
