State of the Ravens Address: Matt Elam Called Out, Pernell McPhee and Torrey Smith Good as Gone?
By Brett Foote
Haloti Ngata Has a “Good Offer” on the Table
The Ravens have reportedly made Haloti Ngata a “very good offer” as they try to restructure his contract and free up cap space. An extension makes a lot of sense as Ngata is unlikely to take a straight pay cut, especially after a solid season. The team can clear up an additional $2.66 million in cap space by cutting fellow defensive lineman Chris Canty.
Lardarius Webb in Line For an Extension
The Ravens are also in the process of trying to restructure Lardarius Webb’s contract, which is set to pay him $8 million in 2015 and count $12 million against the cap. With a heap of dead space, the team is unlikely to cut Webb outright but he should (hopefully) see a reduced role this coming season if the team brings in more talent.
Newsome Calls Out Matt Elam
Ozzie Newsome called out safety Matt Elam in the presser, which was quite refreshing after John Harbaugh defended his poor play all season. “Matt Elam has to be a better player for us next year,” Newsome said. “He has to be.” One of the worst safeties in the NFL in 2014, Elam doesn’t have much rope left.
Terrence Brooks to Begin Season on PUP
2014 3rd round pick Terrence Brooks won’t be around to help the team out at safety to start 2015 either, as Newsome announced he would begin the year on the reserve/PUP list. Brooks tore knee ligaments back in week 16, which makes his prospects of making an impact this coming season very slim.
