After steadying a running game that was seemingly stuck in the mud in 2013, it’s no surprise that the Baltimore Ravens have maintained interest in bringing back Justin Forsett.  And after letting Torrey Smith and Pernell McPhee walk in free agency and trading away Haloti Ngata, they have a little bit of cap space to work with.

Forsett has maintained all along that he is interested in returning to Baltimore, but he is also seeking a multi year committment.  For a 30 year old journeyman, you can’t blame him.  But Forsett also likely realizes that he isn’t going to break the bank in free agency, even though at least three other teams are reported to be interested in his services.
Despite his age and the common trend among 30+ year old running backs falling off a cliff in terms of production, Justin Forsett doesn’t have the wear and tear typical of backs his age.  To put it in perspective, Forsett has only carried the ball a total of 582 times across seven seasons.  DeMarco Murray had 392 carries last season alone.
You can’t blame the Ravens for doing their due diligence here, however.  Forsett had a heck of a season in 2014 but Gary Kubiak is gone and Forsett has never topped 700 yards in a season prior to his late career breakout.  While it’s likely he can have 1-2 more good years, there’s no guarantee he can/will repeat 2014’s performance.
Then again, there’s no reason why the Ravens can’t make a multi year committment either.  Something in the two year, $7 million dollar range would make a lot of sense for both sides.  Now we will just wait and see if the two sides can get it done.
