Baltimore Ravens Were Interested in Mike Wallace, Per Report

The Baltimore Sun’s Mike Preston passed along a very interesting little tidbit over the weekend that has Ravens fans wondering what could have been.  It also gives them a little bit of hope that the team is actually looking at veteran wide receivers after failing to show much known interest early in free agency.

It makes sense that the Ravens would have only been interest if Mike Wallace was released.  There’s no way they would have absorbed the $9.85 million dollar cap hit he will occupy in 2015 (assuming the Vikings don’t redo his contract), nor would they have likely given up any precious draft picks.

Regardless of their interest, it’s a moot point.  The Vikings shipped a mere 5th round pick to Miami for Wallace and a 7th round pick.  The most interesting thing about this report is it proves the Ravens are in the market for a speedy, deep threat type of receiver to replace Torrey Smith.

If they are truly sticking to their guns on the type of guy they want, the Ravens will likely turn their attention to the draft as free agency is currently devoid of deep threat receivers.  A guy like Ohio State’s Devin Smith is a possibility as a projected second round pick.  Smith runs a 4.42 40 and goes 6’0″ and 196 pounds, which compares very favorably to Mike Wallace’s 4.33 40 time and 6’0″, 200 pound frame.
