The Ravens are obviously uncomfortable going into the 2015 season not knowing whether or not Dennis Pitta will ever be physically able to play again.  Outside of Pitta’s question mark, the team also lost fellow tight end Owen Daniels to free agency.  That leaves last year’s third round pick, Crockett Gillmore, and frequent practice squad call up Phillip Supernaw as the current depth chart at tight end.

One of the better remaining tight ends available in free agency is former Arizona Cardinal Rob Housler, a 27 year old with plus athleticism and a move tight end skill set.  The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Housler and the Ravens have mutual interest at this time, and are working on the financial details of a possible contract.

The combination of Rob Housler and the Ravens would prove to be a marriage made in heaven after the talented four year veteran was criminally underutilized during his tenure in Arizona.  Housler has never topped 460 yards receiving or one touchdown in a season, largely due to the scheme that Cardinals’ head coach Bruce Arians deploys, one that does not utilize the tight end in the passing game.

Housler would present a great fit for the Ravens offense as a big (6’5″, 250 pound), speedy guy with sure hands and route running chops.  Housler has a bit of a nagging injury history and isn’t much of a blocker, but he would represent a quality signing for a team that is currently  a little short on pass catching talent at any position.
