Most everyone had already written the talented but troubled Oklahoma wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham completely off when it comes to the possibility that the Baltimore Ravens might draft him. After all, this is a team that has not been shy about its tough stance on character going forward, and DGB might be the most polarizing character in the upcoming NFL Draft.
But Ozzie Newsome and company may be tapping the brakes on those ideas. In a pre-draft news conference Wednesday, Newsome revealed that the Ravens have not only brought in Green-Beckham for a visit, but Washington cornerback Marcus Peters as well. Both are among the most talented players in the draft at their respective positions, but both had their fair share of issues while in college.
While a pre-draft visit doesn’t always mean that a team is interested in drafting a player, it does signal that the Ravens haven’t completely dismissed the idea of drafting either player. Eric DeCosta furthered that thought by telling the press that the team hasn’t removed any player from it’s draft board for character issues…yet.
It’s a surprising revelation that goes against everything we’ve assumed to this point, though it might still amount to nothing. This is a team that has been throwing up a lot of smoke screens lately in regards to their draft plans, and they have nothing to gain by admitting that they have no interest in any particular players. Their best bet is to show interest in every player…except maybe the ones they really want.
Regardless, this is good news for the legions of Ravens fans clamoring for DGB or Peters to be the pick at number 26. We’ll find out pretty soon just how much truth there is to any of this noise.
