Baltimore Ravens Interested in Michael Crabtree, Per Report

The market for former 49er wide receiver Michael Crabtree has thus far been very slow to develop.  That appears to be quickly changing, however, as we head into the sixth week of free agency.  Three teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, are reportedly showing interest in the top remaining wide receiver available.

Matt Maiocco at CSNBayArea.com notes that the Ravens, along with the Raiders and Dolphins, have shown the most interest in Crabtree so far.  Crabtree has already met with the Dolphins and Raiders, but has not had a visit with the Ravens (at least not one that has been reported).  The Ravens could look to bring Crabtree in with an eye towards signing him after May 12th, when he wouldn’t cost the team a compensatory draft pick.

Crabtree is likely looking for a good spot to rehab his value, which hit a low point after he failed to recapture his early career form following a ruptured achilles tendon in 2013.  Crabtree also dropped 10 of 78 catchable passes in 2014 according to Pro Football Focus, a rate that was fourth worst in the NFL last season.  It’s worth noting, however, that Torrey Smith was the second worst.

Michael Crabtree was originally rumored to be looking for around $9-$10 million a year in free agency, but may be resigned to signing a one year, $2-$3 million dollar “prove it” deal at this point.  If he is motivated to do so, the Ravens would present his best opportunity for career rehab.  Signing Crabtree would also plug a big hole for the Ravens and give them some depth at a key position of weakness headed into the draft.
