With Owen Daniels a Bronco and Dennis Pitta uncertain about his future, the Baltimore Ravens are in the market for a tight end as they prepare to go on the clock for this week’s NFL Draft.  One possibility as a projected second or third round pick is Miami’s Clive Walford, who had a predraft meeting with the team.

Widely ranked as the second best tight end in the draft behind Minnesota’s Maxx Williams, Walford is a former basketball player with red zone chops, scoring 14 career touchdowns across 121 catches.  His college production won’t blow anyone away, but Walford is a good all around tight end with excellent blocking skills.

As such, Clive Walford would be an excellent get as a versatile tight end who would be best utilized in offenses that run two TE sets like the Ravens have shown the desire to do.  His skill set is very much like the Colt’s Dwayne Allen, a guy who can block and catch touchdowns but who isn’t an elite athlete or seam stretcher by any means.

Those traits would make him a nice addition for the Ravens, but they would still lack the move tight end they would need to run two TE sets.  Walford is a similar player to Crockett Gillmore (but is a better blocker), so this selection would signify a lack of confidence in Gillmore’s development.  I would personally expect them to look more towards an athletic pass catcher, but you certainly can’t rule anything out at this point.
