Welcome to the Daily Caw, where we round up all the latest Baltimore Ravens news from around the web.  In today’s news, one of the benefactors from last year’s tattered secondary group has signed with another team, and thankfully the Ravens have once again avoided the franchise tag drama that plagued teams like the Cowboys and Broncos this year.

Plus, we play the hypothetical game and wonder what would have happened if Art Modell hadn’t fired Bill Belichick.

Ex-Ravens safety Jeromy Miles signs with GiantsAaron Wilson, The Baltimore Sun

"Veteran reserve safety Jeromy Miles is going to sign a one-year contract today with the New York Giants, according to an NFL source.Miles had talks with the Ravens this offseason about returning and could have been re-signed, but didn’t agree to terms and is now joining the Giants.Miles joined the Ravens as a special-teams ace two seasons ago, but he also played a lot at safety last season."

Thankfully, Ravens avoided franchise tag drama againJohn Eisenberg, BaltimoreRavens.com

"It’s the NFL’s version of summer-stock theater – a loud, overheated drama that goes on too long. The Ravens have hosted their share of such grim, deadline-oriented presentations over the years, most recently in 2012, when they put the franchise tag on Ray Rice in hopes of eventually getting his name on a long-term deal. (How long ago does that seem?) Before that, they tagged Haloti Ngata in 2011, Terrell Suggs in 2008 and 2009, Chris McAlister in 2003 and 2004 and Wally Williams in 1999.I don’t know about you, but I’m appreciating the peace and quiet of a tag-free summer in 2015."

What if Modell didn’t fire Belichick?Tony Lombardi, Russell Street Report

"Yesterday I reminisced about the 2010 NFL Draft and how Dez Bryant got away from Ozzie Newsome & Co. This morning I took a stroll down memory lane, perhaps inspired by my interview with the Ravens Kevin Byrne, and pondered the hiring of Ted Marchibroda as the very first head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. What if Bill Belichick had stayed on with the franchise and instead HE was the Ravens very first head coach?Do they win Super Bowl XXXV? Do they even get there?"

Under Pees defense will never be eliteRussell Street Report

"Regardless, not only would the Broncos have likely scored more points (Due to injuries in the secondary), but Dean Pees would not have challenged Manning in this manner. It wasn’t even that they weren’t getting WRs open deep. They were open. Manning was overthrowing them. Pees would have tried to take away the big plays, let Manning get into a rhythm with the shorter passes and they would have put up 30 points.Which is why the New England game from last year still bothers me. I’ve heard people say that they eventually tried to press and still got beat. By that time, however, they’d already allowed Brady to get into a rhythm with the shorter passes. Plus, you then have the CBs and secondary overall thinking way too much, because the shorter passes have been established. Whereas, if they’d come out with the strategy from the very beginning and stuck with it, they would have had more success. They still likely would have given up 25+, but the game was only decided by 4 points."
