Baltimore Ravens starting running back Justin Forsett is off to a poor start as the go-to guy for Baltimore’s running attack. His performance thus far has failed to mirror his start last season as he’s almost been a non-factor, recording 124 yards rushing on 39 attempts and no touchdowns, according to espn.com.
While he was better Week 2 against the Oakland Raiders, averaging four and a half yards per carry, he had the worst performance of the three games in Baltimore’s home opener. He ran for just 13 yards on 10 carries Sunday against Cincinnati per espn.com.
Last season, Forsett not only took the city of Baltimore by storm with his impressive play, but he also shook up the league, earning himself a trip to the Pro Bowl, his first of his seven-year NFL career at the time.
This year, a Pro Bowl isn’t even looking possible for the running back out of the University of California. Forsett has had a few flashbacks of the Forsett of last season, but he’s going to need a whole lot more of those if he even wants to keep his starting spot for next year, which will be the second year of his three-year deal for $9 million.
It’s obvious that Forsett is not the only problem on the offensive side of the football, but without a strong or even solid running attack, you can’t expect an offense to go very far. Joe Flacco hasn’t been his normal self either and he lacks targets from a wide receiver standpoint, which is why the Ravens need Forsett now more than ever.
This season could really be the year Forsett breaks out career wise, but he’s going to have to step it up. If not, he’ll walk away from this season the same way Ray Rice did in 2013; blaming his lack of production on ailments and a mediocre offensive line, which had some truth to it, but did nothing for Rice’s stock the following season.
