Charles James made quite an impression with football fans across the globe following his impressive performances and his colorful socks on HBO’s Hard Knocks. A member of the Houston Texans through training camp and the preseason, James made it to final cuts this summer but wound up losing out on a spot.
The Baltimore Ravens scooped up the smallish but hard working cornerback, who has spent the last five weeks toiling on their practice squad. On Tuesday, the Ravens promoted James to the active roster as well as fellow cornerback Asa Jackson after waiving cornerback Rashaan Melvin and linebacker Jason Babin.
Charles James measures in at a rather small 5’9″ and 179 pounds, but endeared himself to viewers of Hard Knocks and the Texans coaching staff this offseason with his high effort play. Lining up at running back and in the secondary, James made several big plays and showed well as a special teams returner.
Perhaps James’ best attributes, other than his outgoing personality and affinity for crazy looking socks, is his willingness to play any position. When given the opportunity to play running back, James picked up the position very quickly and actually performed quite well.
James even ripped off a 73 yard touchdown run against the Saints this preseason, which was unfortunately negated by a holding call. But James kept the ball regardless.
Charles James had some other nice moments during Hard Knocks, including some kind words and a hand shake he exchanged with Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning before a preseason contest. Even FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews sought out James to praise him for his work in camp.
James is obviously grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to making an impact on the field. As are the Ravens, who desperately need a spark on the field to turn around their almost lost season. James, with his positive and enigmatic personality (and wicked sock collection) is just the guy to do it.
