Watson is coming off the best season of his 13 year career. Catching passes from Drew Brees, he proved to be a dynamicplaymaker and a go-to-guy when the Saints needed to move the chains. Watson hauled in 74 receptions for over 800 yards and six touchdowns in 2015.
Watson has always been capable of this type of performance. Watson started his career with the New England Patriots in 2004. He developed into a solid tight end by the 2006 season when he had 49 receptions, 643 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Watson’s next stop was the Cleveland Browns. In 2010, Watson was a truly productive tight end and he racked up 68 receptions. When Jordan Cameron came onto the scene in 2011, Watson’s role with the Browns shrunk a bit.
In his first two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, he was out shadowed by Jimmy Graham. When Graham was dealt to the Seattle Seahawks, Watson showed his value.
Watson and Crockett Gillmore could be a great pairing at the tight end position. It would be nice to see some two tight end sets. The Ravens will use their zone blocking scheme to get big runs. They’ll then take some shots with play-action. Over the middle of the field, Watson and Gillmore are both mismatches for linebackers, due to their quickness. They are also big bodied targets that will give defensive backs fits. Maxx Williams also fit into the equation which makes the Ravens situation at the tight end spot very exciting.
Nick Boyle, who was suspended 10 games is probably out the door. Dennis Pitta’s fate is obvious at this point. The Ravens have moved full speed ahead at the tight end position.
