Scooby Wright Is All Heart And Has Untapped Potential

Scooby Wright is one of the most interesting players in this draft class; truth be told he is the kind of player that it is impossible for me not to root for. Wright doesn’t have the polish of a top-10 pick. In the second round, Wright would become a real option. The Baltimore Ravens need an outside linebacker for the future, should the Ravens target Scooby Wright?

Why He Is Intriguing:

The NFL Draft is a calculated process. Nothing is done on a whim. Each draft pick is an investment carrying different weights. Wright is somebody the Ravens would have to take a chance on. He is an unpolished linebacker who needs to be coached up a bit. Wright has that special something, that makes me think that Wright is worth the risk of a second round pick.

Wright has talent. He is a good run defender who could develop into a great pass rusher. He is the kind of player who keeps coming, no matter what. I see a little Jarrett Johnson in him. Johnson wasn’t supposed to be the rock that he was for the Ravens. Johnson was a fourth round pick, who ended up having record setting longevity with the Ravens. Johnson was a bit bigger than Wright, but Wright has more upside than Johnson. If Wright cleans up some things in his game, he could be really good. He has untapped potential.

Wright is all heart. He plays with his emotions on his sleeve. He has a high motor and he is a competitor. In a world where everything is measured, we call these intangibles. Wright’s intangibles jump out at you; he has the real ability to be a leader. He has a tenacity about him that screams Ravens football. He has the kind of heart that Ray Lewis displayed for so many years, in Baltimore.

Why He Is A Risk:

Wright is undersized at an even six feet tall and 239 pounds. He doesn’t have the insane explosive athletic ability that Noah Spence and Joey Bosa have. He is can take himself out of position by being over aggressive. From a technique perspective, I see some troubling things. But I have always believed that players who play at full speed, on every single snap, find a way to make plays. There are better options at outside linebacker in this draft. These options are certainly more of a sure thing. I have a hunch that Wright will be a good player, but I couldn’t tell you that there isn’t doubt here.

Conclusion:

If the players that I have ranked higher than Wright are available, he isn’t the guy the Ravens should take. The NFL Draft isn’t a Las Vegas table game, gambling isn’t always required to have fun. If the Ravens want to draft an outside linebacker at this spot, Wright could end up being the best option. Wright has upside and with some coaching he could be a superstar.

I happen to be a fan of Wright. I think his intangibles are out of this world. I love aggressive players. I love heart. Wright has the talent to back it up. If the Ravens draft Wright they could find the key to unlocking his amazing potential.
