Why Ravens Focus Should Be Defense
Ravens Need Defense To Be Great, Offense To Be Good
The Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV in the 2000 season, with historically great defense. While defense still wins championships, the NFL has changed. It’s hard to imagine that a Trent Dilfer led team could climb the mountain top behind any defense today. In this new era of football you need a little more balance.

A great defense is still one of the biggest building blocks of a champion. In the salary cap era, it is hard to dominate on both sides of the football. Without a franchise quarterback, a Super Bowl is almost impossible to reach. With a franchise quarterback, you have a shot at getting to the big game. If you look at the last several Super Bowl champions, there is one thing in common.
It is next to impossible to have a great offense and a great defense. The Super Bowl winners in recent years have followed a model of being great on one side of the ball and good on the other. The Broncos had a great defense, and their offense made enough plays to win games. The Patriots had a great offense with a good defense; though they won the game on a goal line stand. The Seahawks had a great defense and a good offense.
The Ravens offense is in pretty good shape right now. If they can add some depth to the offensive line, there really isn’t much reason for concern. Joe Flacco will be ready to go for the beginning of the season. Steve Smith Sr. and Kamar Aiken are coming back. Mike Wallace and Breshad Perriman can stretch the field vertically. The tight end combination of Ben Watson, Crockett Gillmore and Maxx Williams could be amazing.

The point is that the Ravens offense already projects to be good next season. The Ravens were 14th in total offense last season, despite everything that went wrong. In a horrible season with injuries and a lack of talent, the Ravens put up surprisingly decent numbers. Joe Flacco and company may or may not set the world on fire, but they will play well.
The Ravens focus this offseason needs to be building a great defense. The Ravens aren’t far away from having a great defense. Signing Eric Weddle will really help the secondary. If the Ravens can just sure up the cornerback position and add some pass rush, the Ravens could dominate on defense. A great defense is a goal that is within reach, with a month to go before the NFL Draft.
