The Baltimore Ravens Have One Glaring Problem…

The Baltimore Ravens have failed to address their need at the cornerback position. Think about it this way, the Ravens are going into the 2016 season with Shareece Wright as their number two corner. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Whether or not Ladarius Webb is indeed a free safety next season, the Ravens options at the position are rather bleak. Jimmy Smith and Wright are pegged as the Ravens number 1 and number 2. Kyle Arrington and rookie Tavon Young will compete for the nickel spot. The Ravens do not look equipped to fix their cornerback woes.

The Eric Weddle signing will help the secondary tremendously. He will be a playmaker who will get everyone on the right track. There are only so many problems one player can solve; this means the Ravens still have a need for cornerbacks. 15 cornebacks were taken by the time the Ravens drafted Young in the fourth round.

The Ravens strategy is obviously to ease the pressure on their secondary by applying pressure to the quarterback. After drafting four front seven players, the team is fully stocked at linebacker and on the defensive line. The defense will have no problem stopping the run. The team will go as its pass rushers go. A great pass rush, gives the Ravens a shot at defensive success.

The Ravens have had problems in the secondary since winning the Super Bowl in 2012. It’s not shocking that losing a legendary free safety like Ed Reed and struggles in pass defense have a positive correlation. But it’s time the Ravens got their act together along the back-end of their defense.

Hopefully Ozzie Newsome knows something that we don’t. Hopefully the cornerback problem doesn’t kill Baltimore’s playoff hopes. When you go against teams that have a quarterback, the secondary will be tested. Just like Weddle can only do so much for the secondary, the pass rush is only part of the solution.
