Do the Baltimore Ravens have a spot for a fullback? The decision on Kyle Juszczyk fate could be more complicated than you may think…

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the remaining teams with a fullback. It’s not surprising that a team that prides itself on physicality still finds use for Kyle Juszczyk at the fullback position. I should preface this article by saying that I am a huge fan of number 44. Juszczyk is a good blocker and a weapon most defenses don’t account for.

It’s just that when you have four tight ends (not counting Nick Boyle and Darren Waller who will serve 10 game and 4 game suspensions respectively) the fullback is a luxury. The Ravens face tough decisions. They have to trim a group of 90 players into a 53 man roster. Cutting Juszczyk could make sense.

The thought process that leads to this idea is simple. The Ravens could easily use on of their tight ends as a fullback. The Ravens also run a zone blocking scheme that is less dependent on running a two back offense. The Ravens roster will be inevitably heavy at the tight end position. If losing Juszczyk means the purple and black can keep seven wide receivers, it’s an idea that must be explored.

I don’t think Juszczyk will be cut. It’s just an idea that I have to play around with. Marc Trestman’s play calling suggests he is infatuated with the idea of getting the Harvard fullback more involved. Juszczyk caught 41 passes last season for 321 yards and four touchdowns. That’s 21 more receptions than he had under Gary Kubiak in 2014. Juszczyk also provides value on special teams. That plays a huge role here as well.

The Ravens are going to have a handful of players that they won’t want to keep off the active roster. I would argue that a fullback is a luxury and not a need. It would be surprising and disappointing if Juszczyk wasn’t on the team in 2016. That being said it would be understandable.
