Can Tavon Young Steal Job From Jerraud Powers?
Tavon Young Gave Ravens Reason For Hope. Jerraud Powers Did Not Inspire In The First Preseason Game.
Last night the secondary gave Ravens fans the most pause. One player who struggled was the free agent addition of Jerraud Powers. The nickel back is an important position. Tavon Young has had a great training camp. Can he steal Powers job?
It was the way that Powers played that makes me have reservations. He got beat inside for an easy completion, right off the bat. He got scorched on a play soon after that. It makes you wonder if Powers was available for a reason. It also makes you wonder if his job is safe.
What good is Powers’s experience, if he plays awful football? Young may be a rookie, however it is clear that he has talent. Young has been an interception machine in training camp. He has a feisty go get it attitude that makes him a play-maker.

Young reminds me of Corey Graham. Ironically, Graham was an under the radar pick up just like Powers was. Graham was a little undersized and played best in the slot. He worked his way to being the number two corner and got paid by the Buffalo Bills. Young has that kind of ability. If Powers doesn’t fill defensive backs coach, Leslie Frazier with confidence he shouldn’t wait to get Young in the action.
Last night, Young made a great special teams play. He sprinted down the field and slammed the punt returner. Young also returned a kick for 22 yards. Young is most likely a better tackler than Powers as well. The only concern with Young (other than his inexperience) is health.

During the game Young went into the locker room to have his knee checked out. We’ll have to wait and see on that. One thing is clear, he has talent and tenacity.
