Baltimore Ravens: Matt Judon Impresses In His First Game
By Tj Ray
The Baltimore Ravens are very encouraged by Matt Judon’s potential.
The preseason opener against Carolina was our first look at the rookies of the 2016 draft. Many of the rookies impressed, especially on the defensive line. The Ravens were consistently overpowering the Panther’s offensive line with their front seven. Fifth-round draft pick Matt Judon stood out as someone who could potentially become a star.

The rookie defensive end led the Ravens in tackles with seven, also tallying one sack. Judon’s speed and explosiveness off the line were particularly impressive. He was able to penetrate the Panthers’ offensive line with ease. Judon shed blockers and got into the backfield consistently throughout the game.
One of the biggest concerns about Judon going into the draft was his ability to transition to the speed and intensity of the NFL. Judon comes from a small school, Grand Valley State. He led all of college football with twenty sacks in 2015.
Some say he only achieved this because of the low level of competition he faced. However, if you watch any tape on Judon, it quickly becomes apparent that he’s got what it takes. After watching him play against the Panthers, concerns about where he went to school are all but vanquished.
The Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome has a knack for finding guys from small schools with the ability to succeed in the NFL. Look no further than quarterback Joe Flacco for another guy drafted out of a small school.

The Ravens are a team desperate for someone to step up on defense and become a play-maker. Veterans Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil aren’t getting any younger and are both currently on the PUP. With young guys like Judon and Za’Darius Smith on the front seven, there’s hope that the Ravens historically fearsome defense can live on. Be sure to keep an eye on the young edge rusher to see if he can continue to impress.
